TIFFANY MILLS COMPANY
Summer Workshop June 10 – June 14, 2013
We are pleased to offer our Eighth Annual Summer Workshop in New York City, which provides an in-depth exploration into partnering and creative process. Working as a choreographer for the past eighteen years with a dedicated group of dancers, I am interested in continuing this five-day intensive as a movement laboratory within the dance community.
Last year our class offerings shifted to more fully embrace partnering. With resounding positive feedback, we will continue in this vein. Our schedule includes: (1) A morning Partnering Technique Class, where students can either learn new skills, or hone those they already have. (2) An afternoon Partnering Composition Class, where students will create their own partnering material with my guidance.
I hope you will join us for a week of creative exploration. We will enter the work through our different vantage points, in hopes of finding a rich language and meaningful journey. In this intimate setting, workshop participants will have contact not only with myself, but also with Company Members and teachers — Jeffrey Duval, Kevin Ho, Emily Pope-Blackman, and Petra van Noort. The Workshop will culminate with a showing including the Company and Workshop Participants — a chance to share what we leaned about ourselves, and our collaborators. The whole Company looks forward to delving into partnering this summer as we uncover something about human nature that can resonate.

MORNING: Monday-Friday, June 10 – June 14, 10:00am-12:30pm
Taught by Company Members, this class offers an opportunity to work in-depth on body alignment, physical clarity, breath, and movement initiation so the dancer can connect his/her inner and outer worlds with that of a partner. In the warm-up, students are brought to a calm place, focusing on ease in the muscles while allowing the skeleton to move freely, yet clearly, with a partner. From here the dancers are guided through exercises to mentally and physically awaken and energize. Students will explore connection to the floor—through use of weight, connection to space—through use of focus, and connection to a partner – through use of touch. All will lead to powerful and articulate movement with others.
AFTERNOON: Monday-Friday, June 10 – June 14, 1:30-3:30pm
Taught by Tiffany Mills and assisted by Company Members, this class gives participants an opportunity to step into the Company’s choreographic process. Students will use tools they honed in the morning Partnering Technique Class, to create new material based on trust, listening, weight, touch, sight and sound. In this afternoon class, students will explore how to bridge improvisation into set material – building duets with full weight bearing/sharing and an exploration of levity and gravity. Dancers will be encouraged to open to spontaneity, risk and creativity. Participants will experience how working with Mills, seemingly abstract material will evolve into choreography that reveals relationships with emotional resonance.
EVENING SHARING: Friday, June 14th, 7:00 – 9:00 pm
To complete the Workshop, Company Members and Workshop Participants will informally share material created in class. At the beginning of this sharing, audience members will be invited to participate in a physical warm-up, to introduce them to the type of skills learned during the Workshop week. At the end of the sharing, a question and answer session will be held to discuss creative process. This sharing is free and open to the public. Please invite your friends for a free evening of dance, food and drink.
