“LET’S DANCE!”

The Bildner Center for Jewish Life and the Dance Department co-present “Let’s Dance,” a film about dance in Israel.

Sunday, October 27 at 12:45 pm (1 hour long) at the Regal Cinemas, on Route 1 South
.
“Let’s Dance” reveals, through archival photographs, contemporary film, and early black and white film clips, the fascinating history of dance in pre-independence Palestine, including the folk-dancers of the collective farms movement called Kibbutzim and a dancer who may have been a spy.  The film then provides interviews (in English and Hebrew, with English sub-titles) with contemporary dancers in the 20th and 21st century, who have made Israeli dance a vital force in the world of contemporary dance, including Ohad Naharin’s Batsheva Dance Company, Yasmin Godder, Yossi Berg, and Niv and Oren, our guest artists at the Dance Department this coming week, among many others. Many clips of dancing and choreography are included.
.
SOPHOMORES:  In order to introduce you to the excitement of dance in Israel and our Study Abroad program at the DanceJerusalem, the Dance Department is providing free tickets and requiring your attendance at this film, IF you do not have a planned rehearsal or other legitimate conflicts before 3 pm in the afternoonon Sunday. Please see Jeff if you have questions.
OTHER STUDENTS IN THE DANCE DEPARTMENT: You are not required to attend, but if you are interested, depending on numbers of sophomores attending, we may have additional free tickets available.  Please contact Jeff if you are interested at: jfdance@rci.rutgers.edu.

KUDOS & SHOUT OUTS

Congratulations to Doug Elkins and 2011 BFA alum Kyle Marshall who garnered critical acclaim for the performance of Mo(or)town Redux at New York City Center Fall for Dance Festival on October 2nd and 3rd. Doug’s company, Doug Elkins choreography, etc., shared the playbill with Dorrance Dance, Royal Ballet and Martha Graham Dance Company, playing to a full house 2000+ audience.  New York Times critic, Alastair Macaulay, lauded Kyle in the lead as Othello, and declared Elkins’ work, Mo(or)town Redux as “one of the most compelling dance creations of this century.” Read Article
