INTERESTING COURSES FOR 2014-2015
English Department, Writers House presents Fall 2014 course
351:308:01 Introduction to Playwriting/writing for live performance
With playwright/scholar Caridad Svich
(Winner of OBIE for Lifetime Achievement,
& the National Latino Playwriting Award)
Wednesdays, 9:50 AM-12:50 PM in Murray Hall 003
“This space of writing is a space of tensions and fissures and tectonic plates shifting across fields of time. Reach for the stars, but stay close to the dirt. This is the charge of making theatre. Smell the smoke of language pouring from the mouths of the wild children who play out their salvaged stories one more time. Awake to dreaming anew. Alight the pen. Weigh your words against the spectacle and tyranny of power. Choose freedom. At all costs.” – Caridad Svich

The original piece is a tribute to and is inspired by the struggles, triumphs, artistry, and exhibitionism of Josephine Baker. A process called “Historical Collaboration”–involving intensive study of many resources–was used to create the work. Performances run April 10, 11 & 12 at 8pm, and April 12 & 13 at 2pm.
