5 dancers needed:
October 18th 2-3pm The Gateway Project, Gateway Center, Newark, NJ
The project is a part of the exhibition “Prologue_Epilogue”
Justin Randolph Thompson in collaboration with Stefanie Nelson, Bradly Dever Treadaway, Jason Thompson and Kimani Fowlin
For this performance dancers will collaborate with Kimani Fowlin in the development of the choreographed portion of this project. For this segment we will draw from the Afro centric emphasis of the figures Paul Robeson and Amiri Baraka to develop movements that carry both a connectedness to the African continent and folk traditions in movement there as well as a military like precision based marching. This juxtaposition of movements is meant to reflect upon our shifting political views of the African continent and the history of US based organizations for social resistance. Fowlin will develop the choreography with her students based on her own Afro Fusion course work.
Drawing its’ title from the Amiri Baraka poem ‘Preface to a Twenty Volume Suicide Note’ in which Baraka states ’Nobody sings anymore’, this work exists as a prologue and epilogue to the erection of monuments and the cultural landscape which uses monuments to forget. Preface to 20 voices for Robeson is a performance and sound work that seeks to draw upon the legacy of Paul Leroy Robeson, Amiri Baraka and the notion of fallen monuments. This work is created in collaboration with Jazz Composer Jason Thompson, Filmmaker Bradly Dever Treadaway and Choreographers Stefanie Nelson and Kimani Fowlin. For this project, dancers will shift between second line style marching, military formations and eruptions of jazz funeral celebratory gestures. This layered process of marching and of community as protest draws upon the rich legacy of Newark through these two monumental figures and the physical carrying, erecting then dismantling of these monuments shifts between notions of destruction and commemoration.
