“China Today” Summer Camp in Shanghai, China, 2015
The Confucius Institute of Rutgers University (CIRU) is pleased to announce its second “China Today” summer camp for college students in New Jersey. The summer camp in Shanghai, in cooperation with Shanghai University, aims at introducing college students to various aspects of contemporary China including economy, trade and finance, society, literature, and popular culture. It is a part of the general mission of the Confucius Institute to promote Chinese language and culture through firsthand experience of daily life in China.
Dates: June 7-16, 2015
Location: The summer camp will be held on the campus of Shanghai University and includes excursions to nearby cities such as Suzhou, Wuxi and Hangzhou etc.
Housing: Students will be housed in Shanghai University dormitories. Double occupancy.
Participants: Up to 15 undergraduate students currently enrolled in a college/university in New Jersey will be accepted. Preference is given to juniors and seniors in good academic standing who have never been to China.
Costs covered by CIRU: Room and board, course materials, extra-curricular activities, and scheduled excursions.
Students’ responsibilities: A $50 non-refundable application fee paid to CIRU upon submitting application; Apply for a visa to China with a valid passport (visa application fee is between $140 and $170); A roundtrip plane ticket between New Jersey and Shanghai (* CIRU will provide financial support. Student is responsible for a minimum of $600); Personal expenses for the duration of the stay.
Certificate: A certificate will be issued after completion of the summer camp.
Application Deadline: March 31, 2015.
Application Material: completed application form; $50 non-refundable application; short statement (max. 300 words) describing interest in the program and China study experience, if any; official college transcripts.

- Experience Chinese culture through interaction with local students, guided trips, and lectures by experts in various fields
- Visit new and old sites in Shanghai such as Yu Garden, the Bund, Oriental Pearl; Shanghai Expo area, the new financial district in Pudong, and the newly established China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, the first of its kind in China
- Travel to cultural cities nearby Shanghai such as Suzhou, Wuxi, and Hangzhou
