SPECIAL EVENTS

“DANCING WITH THE SPIRIT”

(Please sign-up by Tuesday, September 15th on the sheet on bulletin board across from Studio 110; tickets will be printed and held at box office at Nicholas Music Center for you to pick up before the show)

Dancing with the Spirit explores the artistic and spiritual dimensions of the African-derived religious traditions of Cuban Santeria and Brazilian Candomble in Americas. The program features performances by Afro-Cuban Experimental Ensemble Oyu Oro and Afro Brazilian Folkloric Music and Dance Ensemble Ologunde.

Performance followed by a roundtable discussion with artists Danys “La Mora” Perez and Dende Macedo, Rutgers professors Carlos Decena (Latino and Hispanic Caribbean Studies, Women and Gender Studies), Eduardo Herrera (Mason Gross Music Department), and Jeff Friedman (Mason Gross Dance Department), and moderated by Center for Latino Arts and Culture Director Carlos Fernandez.

FREE AFRO LATINO DANCE WORKSHOP

Presented in conjunction with the program, Dancing with the Spirit (September 25), this workshop is conducted by leading artists of the ensembles Oyu Oro Afro Cuban Experimental Dance and Ologunde Afro Brazilian Folkloric Music and Dance. The workshops will focus on the musical, movement and choreographic aspects characteristic of Afro Brazilian Candomble and Afro Cuban Santeria.
