Description and History of Trio A
Trio A consists of a sequence of movement that was initially presented as “The Mind Is a Muscle, Part I” at Judson Church on January 10, 1966.There it was performed by Reiner, David Gordon, and Steve Paxton simultaneously but not in unison. It was subsequently documented as a solo by Rainer in a 16mm film produced by Sally Banes in 1978. Since then the dance has taken on myriad forms, including execution by a large group in the nude (“Trion A With Flags”); a retrograde version by Pat Catterson; “Trio A Pressured” with one dancer running around trying to maintain eye contact.
