FROM JULIA
I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Ayrin Ersoz, Director of the Dance Program at Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul, Turkey, has been awarded a Fulbright Visiting Research Scholar Fellowship in the Dance Department for AY 2016-2017. Dr. Ersoz is the Dance Department’s first Fulbright Visiting Research Scholar.
Dr. Ersoz’s research project is titled Muslim Female Students in Higher Education in the United States: Approaches to and Experiences of Dance and Embodied Performance. Young Muslim women living in Western countries can face challenges when participating in physical activities due to religious and cultural restrictions. At present, there are no significant studies devoted to exploring how young Muslim women approach and experience dance and embodied practices when living in Western countries where dance has prominence as an art form and as a social and recreational activity.
Through her research, Dr. Ersoz aims to better understand the role that Islam plays in young Muslim female student’s perceptions of dance as an art form and the impact of religion on their participation in dance as a recreational activity and/or artistic expression.
Dr. Ersoz will work with directors of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, the Department of African Studies and the Center for Asian Studies, as well as two Rutgers student groups — MuslimGirl and Woahjabi — to establish connections with Muslim students at Rutgers University.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Ersoz to our community.
