This 15-hour course provides theoretical, scientific, and contemplative rationale for the use of dance movement therapy with traumatized clients, and as a measure of protection, self care, and increased compassion.  The emphasis of this class is client-therapist co-regulation as both a self-care and a clinical skill that supports DMT’s ability to support clients through their own post-trauma restorative process without re-traumatization. Drawing from a contemplative human rights framework, empowerment and developing a reciprocal alliance are focuses of this course. This class also provides participants with a practical introduction and overview to using DMT in work with survivors of trauma, as well as for therapists own resilience and well-being.  The course teaches DMT practices to support safety and stability in the reciprocal therapeutic relationship. A contemporary, evidenced-based phasic approach to working with complex trauma provides the foundation for theoretical material.

Basic criteria include current or past master’s level coursework in counseling/psychotherapy or dance/movement psychotherapy, including alternate route classes. Some experience working with survivors of trauma is helpful, but not absolutely necessary. A willingness to consider working with trauma and engaging with “terrible knowledge” is essential.

Students will receive the ZOOM invitation when registered.

ONLINE Sunday April 18th 12 pm – 3:30 pm EST

Taught by Corinne Ott, R-DMT, MA

TO REGISTER: https://www.92y.org/class/intro-to-dance-therapy

In this introductory course, you will both experience and learn about the field of dance movement therapy –  its origins, framework and basic processes – and take away some creative tools for navigating uncertain times.

Dance and movement therapy can help raise self-awareness, awaken our creativity, heal wounds, and express ourselves in new ways that also benefit those around us and the world at large.

Movement helps us remember the playfulness, freedom, joy, connection and possibilities that are available in each and every moment.

This course is a virtual space to learn, move, and connect with others. It is appropriate for potential DMT students, dance educators, and those from other disciplines, however dance experience is not required. Wear comfortable clothing to move in and have paper and writing materials handy.

Students will receive the ZOOM invitation when registered.

For further information contact: tedance@live.com

Please register early as there is a limit on the number of students.

Applications are open for mignolo arts center’s brand new dance residency

mignolo arts center is a state of the art, 28×40 foot ADA approved rehearsal studio, gallery, and performance space in Metuchen, NJ. With wall-to-wall mirrors, high ceilings, a marley floor, two bathrooms, and a convenient downtown location that’s walking distance from the train line, the space provides an ideal setting in which to produce creative work.

Dance artists selected for this residency will receive 20 hours of free studio space, which can be used to develop a new dance work or to conduct open-ended movement-based research. Artists will be given the option to present a small, informal showing at the end of the residency, and may also choose to engage in feedback sessions facilitated by mignolo artists. Resident artists will also be featured on our website and social media.

Dance artists at all career stages are welcome and encouraged to apply. Interdisciplinary artists and arts collectives are also encouraged as long as dance is a primary element of the artist or collective’s work. Residency scheduling will be worked out with selected artists.

2021 Programs of The School at Jacob’s Pillow

Even in times of reinvention, we must strive for the dreams we hold dearest, look for ways to stay strong and get stronger, and forge the connections that will advance our work… our dreams.
Next summer will be one of those times for dancers at Jacob’s Pillow.
The School at Jacob’s Pillow continues to be where those committed to being at the forefront of artistry are mentored and nurtured, this time with newly-designed programs running both onsite and online.
For health and safety, eleven dancers per program will work on-site as The School’s Performance Ensemble. In addition, the same remarkable Artist Faculty will lead companion online programs open to 20 dancers. Both groups will perform for Pillow audiences, work with esteemed choreographers, learn dance film techniques, participate in online interactive discussions and seminars together, view footage from the Jacob’s Pillow Archive, and much more.
